  • About Our Porcelain

    • What is porcelain and what’s the difference between porcelain and ceramic?

Ceramic is a broad term which includes several different types such as earthenware, stoneware and yes, porcelain. Being a subcategory of ceramics, porcelain is originated in China and it displays the very highest level of ceramic craftsmanship. Most ceramic items are not porcelain, because porcelain is made of china stone and kaolin clay —the key components of Chinese porcelain clay. Both kaolin and china stone were originally mined near Jingdezhen, they are very rare and seem only exist in China and few other places in Asia.

    • What is hard-paste porcelain and why is it different from the commonly seen bone china?

Hard-paste porcelain is characterised by its translucent and bright white colouring after firing at a high temperature required, roughly 1300°C-1400°C compare to soft-paste porcelain which only required 1200°C. The porcelain has a higher resistance to water compared to its counterpart and is less likely to crack when it comes in contact with the hot liquids or other substances. Hard-paste porcelain is made from a mixture of kaolin clay and china stone which make it harder than soft-paste porcelain. Its glassiness often makes it appear more uniformly translucent when it is held up to the light.

The commonly seen bone china was originally developed in Europe as a substitute for the real (or ‘hard-paste’) porcelain in the late 1700s when kaolin clay was very rare to find. Bone china is a kind of tender porcelain containing bone ash, particularly cow bone. The firing temperature (less than 1250°C) for bone china is lower than that for hard-paste porcelain (higher than 1300°C), which makes it easier and less expensive to produce.

Here at Delain, we are pound of ourselves that our artists make premium hard-paste porcelain only, representing the highest quality and craftsmanship from Jingdezhen.

    • What is underglaze and why is it better for functional wares than on-glaze?

Underglaze or underglaze decoration is a method to apply colours or drawings to the ceramic body which is fired later with a transparent glaze at a high temperature. Due to the protection of the clear glaze covering, the surface of underglaze decoration feels smooth and is non-toxic and lead free, its resistance to abrasion and chemicals makes it more suitable for decorating functional wares.

Onglaze, also known as overglaze decoration or enamel colours, is used to decorate already glazed and fired ceramic body and further fired at a lower temperature. The surface of onglaze decoration is often opaque and detectably raised and it has poor resistance to abrasion and chemicals, which makes it unsuitable for decorating functional wares.

    • Are your porcelain wares dishwasher/oven/microwave safe?

All our ceramic works are fired in high temperature above 1300°C and are safe to use in dishwasher, oven and microwave unless it’s noted otherwise in individual product description. However, some of our artists use real silver or gold to decorate their works which are not meant to use in microwave, please see the individual product description for details.

    • The item I received looks slightly different from the pictures on your website and why?

Our artists make their ceramic works by hand and therefore no two items will ever be exactly the same as we enjoy the individuality and uniqueness of each piece. Some of our artists prefer to make only one or two pieces for each work and may not make any more to retain the rarity and sentiment attached. We endeavour to take the photograph on our website to demonstrate the items as accurately as possible, however actual colours may vary from colours displayed due to a variety of factors such as light, temperature, screen colour etc. If you have any concerns or need any clarifications, please do not hesitate to contact us before ordering.
